Gon Bops Percussion Set

Gon Bops Set; Foto: Thomas Altmann, 2009
When I aquired my Schalloch conga set in 1986, I had to sell my pair of Gon Bops congas, which I regretted later on. I always had a weakness for Gon Bops. I was playing their COB (chrome over brass) 13" and 14" 2TC-76 timbales which I augmented with a 15" later (not pictured), as well as their 7" & 9" IBWL-3014 Walnut bongos (w/ four hooks each). A friend sold me his 9 3/4" International quinto (IQ-3014) in 1983 that I kept to this day, and towards the end of the eighties I bought a large 2DTL-4000 tambora and a set of brass timbalitos. Recently, in 2009, I had a chance to buy a matching 11" ICL-3014 large conga and a 12 1/4 ITL-3014 large tumba second-hand from a friend who was about to move to the States. Gon Bops congas are light-weight mahogany drums, that are (relatively) easy to carry around, that are not particularly loud, but have a warm tone; what makes them perfect for folklore gigs, rumbas, comparsas, bembes etc.. I'm happy to be complete again; I only wish I still had those wooden timbales (tarolas) that I had sold in 1981 ...
